Can I Hire a Private Investigator If I’m Not Based in the UK?

Short answer: Yes. You do not need to be a UK resident to hire a UK-based private investigator. Clients regularly instruct UKPI from overseas for investigations that need to be carried out in the United Kingdom. The process works in much the same way as it does for domestic clients, with some practical adjustments for distance, time zones and payment.

Why Overseas Clients Need UK Investigators

There are many situations where a person living outside the UK needs investigation work done on British soil:

Legal proceedings. If you are involved in litigation, divorce, or custody proceedings that involve a party based in the UK, you may need evidence gathered here. Courts expect evidence to be collected by someone who understands UK law and can attend court to give evidence if required.

Business disputes. Companies based abroad that have UK operations, UK suppliers, or UK-based counterparties sometimes need investigations into fraud, breach of contract, or employee misconduct conducted within UK jurisdiction.

Due diligence. International investors, venture capital firms and foreign companies planning acquisitions or joint ventures in the UK often need background checks and due diligence on UK entities and individuals.

Family matters. Parents living abroad who have concerns about a child residing in the UK, or individuals trying to trace family members in the UK, can instruct a UK investigator to carry out the necessary work.

Asset recovery. People and organisations that have been defrauded by a person or company based in the UK need investigators who can trace UK assets, check company filings, search Land Registry records and identify where money has gone.

Process serving. If you need legal documents served on someone in the UK, a local process server with knowledge of UK procedure is far more effective than attempting to arrange service from overseas.

How the Process Works

The process for overseas clients follows the same steps as for UK-based clients, with minor adjustments:

Initial consultation. Most overseas instructions begin with a phone call, video call, or email exchange. You explain your situation and what you need, and the investigator advises on what can be done, the likely cost, and the expected timeline. There is no need for a face-to-face meeting, though one can be arranged if you visit the UK.

Written agreement. Before work begins, the investigator will provide written terms of engagement setting out the scope of work, fees, payment terms, and confidentiality obligations. This protects both parties and ensures there is a clear record of what was agreed.

Communication. During the investigation, the agency will provide regular updates by email, phone or secure messaging. Time zone differences are managed by scheduling updates at times that work for both parties. At UKPI, we are accustomed to working with clients across different time zones and adjust our communication accordingly.

Reporting. On completion, you receive a full written report with supporting evidence (photographs, documents, records) delivered electronically. If physical copies are needed, they can be sent by courier. Reports are prepared to the same standard regardless of where the client is based.

Legal Considerations

The investigation itself is governed by UK law, regardless of where the client is based. This means:

All evidence gathering must comply with UK data protection law, surveillance law and related legislation. The investigator must have a lawful basis for the work. The methods used must be proportionate and lawful under UK standards.

Your local laws may also be relevant, particularly around how evidence can be used in proceedings in your jurisdiction. It is worth discussing this with your own legal adviser before instructing the investigation, so that the evidence gathered in the UK can be used where you need it.

For due diligence and corporate work, UK corporate investigation methods are widely understood by international courts and regulatory bodies, and UK-gathered evidence is generally well regarded in cross-border proceedings.

Payment and Currency

Most UK agencies accept payment by bank transfer in sterling. Some also accept payment in other major currencies, though exchange rate fees may apply. Credit card payments and secure online payment methods are also common. The agency will confirm payment arrangements as part of the terms of engagement.

A deposit is usually required before work begins, with the balance due on completion or at agreed intervals. The amount and structure will depend on the scope and likely cost of the investigation.

Language

UKPI’s reports and communications are in English. If you need materials translated for use in your jurisdiction, we can recommend translation services, though this is arranged separately. We have worked with clients communicating through their own interpreters and through bilingual solicitors, and we are flexible about how communication is managed.

Choosing a UK Investigator from Overseas

When you are hiring from abroad, it is harder to judge an agency’s quality through local reputation alone. Look for:

An established track record (years in operation, not months). Membership of recognised professional bodies. ICO registration for data protection compliance. Clear written terms and transparent pricing. Willingness to provide references from legal professionals. Experience working with international clients.

UKPI has been operating since 1997 and regularly handles cases for clients based in Europe, the Middle East, North America, Africa and Asia-Pacific. Our team is experienced in managing cross-border investigations and understands the practical and legal considerations involved.
