Find out what may be worth pursuing before you spend more

Before you spend more money pursuing a person or business, you need to know whether there appear to be assets worth pursuing. Asset tracing can identify property, company interests and other assets that may be relevant to your lawful financial claim.

UKPI carries out discreet, evidence-led enquiries using lawful sources. You receive a written report explaining what we found, how strongly the available evidence supports it and where further enquiries may be justified. Think of the report as a map for your next decision: it can show promising routes and dead ends, but it cannot recover the money for you.

Asset tracing is an investigation service. It does not freeze, seize or recover assets, and it does not replace advice from your solicitor or enforcement adviser.

When an asset trace may be useful

You may need an asset trace when you are:

  • Deciding whether enforcement action against a debtor is likely to be worthwhile
  • Concerned that assets have been hidden during a financial dispute
  • Preparing for divorce or other financial proceedings with your solicitor
  • Examining company ownership, directorships or connected business interests
  • Following financial leads after suspected fraud or dishonesty
  • Checking information supplied during litigation, negotiation or due diligence

If the immediate problem is locating the person rather than establishing their financial position, use our debtor tracing service. Where fraud is suspected, our fraud investigation service may require a wider brief.

What an asset investigation can examine

The right checks depend on whom you need us to investigate, why you need the information and what you already know. Your investigation may examine:

  • Property and land interests shown in accessible records
  • Companies, directorships and persons with significant control
  • Trading names, connected businesses and documented commercial interests
  • Insolvency, bankruptcy and relevant court information
  • Publicly identifiable vehicles, vessels or other material assets
  • Open-source information that can corroborate ownership or control
  • Overseas interests where lawful, reliable sources are available in the relevant jurisdiction

A record showing a connection does not automatically prove current ownership or beneficial control. One record is a clue, not the whole picture. We cross-check important findings where possible and separate verified information from leads that still require work.

What asset tracing cannot lawfully provide

You should be wary of anyone promising unrestricted access to private financial information. UKPI will not claim access to bank balances, tax records, credit reports, protected government data or other confidential records without the consent or legal authority required to obtain them.

We also cannot promise that every asset will be found. Ownership may be indirect, records may be incomplete, assets may sit in another jurisdiction, or an apparent connection may no longer be current. We explain these limits before starting so you understand what the investigation can and cannot establish.

How the asset tracing service works

  1. Tell us what you need to establish. You explain the dispute, the subject and the decision the investigation needs to support. We confirm whether the instruction can be accepted.
  2. Agree the scope. We identify the relevant people, companies, jurisdictions and records, then provide a written scope and cost.
  3. We research and verify. Your investigator follows the agreed lines of enquiry and checks significant findings against available evidence.
  4. Report the findings. You receive a written account of the assets and interests identified, the sources used, material limitations and any sensible next enquiries.
  5. Choose your next action. You and your solicitor or enforcement adviser can use the report to assess the appropriate legal or recovery route.

Asset tracing for solicitors and legal proceedings

If you are a solicitor, you can instruct UKPI directly when an asset investigation supports litigation, enforcement, fraud enquiries, contentious probate or financial proceedings. You can limit the brief to one defined subject or, where there is a lawful basis, ask us to examine connected people and companies.

You receive a factual report identifying the information found, its source and any limitations that affect interpretation. If your matter also requires witness location, document service or additional evidence gathering, we can scope these through our legal support services.

Asset tracing costs

Your asset tracing quote depends on the number of subjects, the jurisdictions involved, the depth of verification required and whether you need a broader fraud or legal investigation.

Before work starts, we set out the proposed enquiries, the fee and what your report will cover. You can then weigh the cost of the investigation against the value of your claim instead of writing a blank cheque for uncertain work.

Common questions about asset tracing

Asset tracing is the investigation of property, company interests and other assets connected to a person or business. It helps a client or solicitor assess whether recovery, enforcement or further legal action may be proportionate.

UKPI does not claim unrestricted access to private bank records or balances. We investigate lawful records and other available evidence that may identify assets or financial connections. Access to protected financial information requires the appropriate consent or legal authority.

No. An asset trace can identify and document useful assets or lines of enquiry, but it cannot guarantee that an asset exists, can be enforced against or will result in recovery. A solicitor or enforcement adviser should assess the legal next step.

Yes. Solicitors can instruct UKPI for asset enquiries connected with litigation, enforcement, fraud, contentious probate or financial proceedings, subject to a clear lawful purpose and agreed scope.

The fee is quoted after the scope is understood. Cost depends on the number of subjects, jurisdictions, depth of verification and whether the trace is part of a wider investigation. The proposed work and fee are agreed before the investigation starts.
